Mr. Rai is based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Spire Norwich Hospital and has been since April 2001. From his busy clinic, Mr. Rai treats patients from across Norfolk, East Anglia, and beyond.

He treats a wide range of problems, such as disc herniations in the neck and lower back, spinal deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis in adults and children, plus trauma, infections and tumours.

His approach emphasises non-invasive procedures and he refers to surgery only when other conservative treatment options have been explored.

Extensive training
and experience

Mr. Rai graduated from Southampton University in 1990 and completed his training in Southern England, as well as extensive training on spinal fellowships in Australia, South Africa, America and Europe. He was also awarded a European Travelling Fellowship in 2002, providing the opportunity to gain experience and direct training working with some of the world's most eminent spinal surgeons.

Expertise and knowledge

Mr. Rai is the author of many original research papers into spinal conditions. He has also featured in various newspaper articles and a Discovery Channel documentary on his innovative work at The Norfolk and Norwich Foundation Hospital NHS Trust. He regularly attends spinal meetings and gives lectures both on the national and international circuit.

NHS spinal team

Mr. Rai works closely with fellow orthopaedic consultants Mr Bob Crawford and Mr Lennel Lutchman at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH).

The hospital's spinal unit attracts trainee orthopaedic doctors from Cambridge University and Texas USA and spinal fellows as part of the Specialist Spinal Fellowship which rotates between the NNUH and Addenbrooks hospital in Cambridge.

To date, the spinal team have trained seven spinal consultants who now work throughout the UK.


Consultant anaesthetists Dr Barker and Dr Dhrampal from the Norwich Anaesthetic Group are an integral part of the spinal team.

If you are having surgery, they will arrange a pre-operative assessment to discuss your medical history, the most appropriate anaesthetic for your procedure and any concerns you may have. They can also help with pain control after the operation.


Radiologists from Norwich Radiology Group provide Mr Rai with the most up-to-date spinal images to help him make an accurate diagnosis. A specialized musculoskeletal radiology team also provide valuable advice on difficult cases.


Our physiotherapists work closely with Mr Rai to give a co-ordinated approach to treatment. Highly trained with the clinical expertise to provide early assessment of your symptoms, they play a vital part in helping you understand and manage your spinal problem.

They will devise a personally tailored treatment plan that aims to restore normal function to your body, reduce pain and to promote healing and wellbeing.

Jonathan has over 20 years experience and training in delivering personalised care for the range of spinal conditions, from a stiff neck to post-spinal surgical rehabilitation.

Sarah Considine

Sarah joined the physiotherapy team 5 years ago with a wide range of skills to effectively treat conditions such as lower back pain and whiplash, plus help with post-operation spinal rehabilitation.
